How to submit your events to the Kapow! Poetry Calendar

So, you’ve got this Poetry Calendar and a mailing list of hundreds of lyrically-minded souls, eh? I see you’ve made some changes to your mailouts. What’s the what, then?

  1. The Poetry Calendar is still the simple Google Calendar thing of beauty it always was (only bigger, owing to this catching on somewhat!). Nothing’s changed there - all you have to do to access it is go to the URL and have a look around.

  2. A typical fortnight of the Calendar contains about 100 events. Every week or so, Fay sends out a shorter, hand-picked list of what’s on in the catchment area (see below) in the form of a list of shows, open mics, slams, workshops and broadcasts which have in common either that Kapow! or Friends of Kapow! are involved, or that they’re events we’ve attended or would like to attend ourselves. In short, they’re horribly biased recommendations, but those that show the range of the kind of spoken word wonders available in these parts over the next couple of weeks. You can access the latest of these here.

  3. Events on the Calendar meet certain criteria - they need to be at least 50% spoken word (either poetry or storytelling, but not purely stand-up comedy, music or drama, unless they also involve serious chunks of poetry), and they need to be within about 60-odd miles of the centre of either Milton Keynes, Cambridge, or London Sunday-Thursday; further afield on weekends or for festivals. The event can be any type of installation, featured act performance, an open mic event, a course, or a workshop of some ilk (or a combination of these). We’re not looking to expand this geographical catchment until we have more resources at our disposal - sorry!

Click on the tiny image below to get a better idea of what the catchment area means:

  4. Huzzah! Your event meets these criteria! How do you let us know? Make sure you know the date, time, location (including postcode, please, if possible - London folk, please mention that it’s in London!), cost of entry, and any limitations on performance if it’s open mic/ slam. Then either:

    • The simplest thing is, if you have a Facebook event set up for the event, invite me (Fay Roberts) to the event. Better yet, scroll down to the bottom of the page the event is on, click the "export" link, save the file, and send it to us here at Kapow! Towers. This is what I would do anyway in order to upload it to the Calendar and it saves us both some Facebook-related awkwardness.

    • Download the form for multiple events (even if it's only one event) here, fill it in, and send it back to us. Note that all the fields need to be filled in following the manner of the example text at the top of the form.

    • Don’t just send us a scanned or otherwise image-only version of the flyer (we’re not going to type it out for you unless, frankly, we’re on the bill) of the details. In a similar vein, please note that we can’t add images to the Calendar, so please don’t ask, eh?

  5. Oh, and do try to give us more than a couple of days’ notice - it more certainly guarantees you getting listed. :)

If you’ve got any further questions, just let us know!
